New radar in eastern Finnmark

Avinor has already started the building of a new radar close to Kirkenes Airport in eastern Finnmark. This will improve the control over flight traffic in the region.

Location

The radar has two main objects. One is to improve the control over air traffic in Finnmark better and the other is to ease the landings at Høybuktmoen, Kirkenes Airport, says Avinor in a press release.

In addition to Kirkenes Airport, there are six smaller airports in Eastern Finnmark. For Avinor it has a high priority to secure the air space over Finnmark. Avinor has plans to build another radar witin 2010 in western Finnmark, close to Alta Airport. Both radars are part of larger project which shall provide full radar coverage in all of continental Norway.

When the project is completed, there will be ten new radars in Norway. Among other thing, the radars will make landings and take offs more efficient, and thus less polluting.
