Gazprom started construction of sub-sea pipeline

The Baidarata Bay, Yamal

Russian energy major Gazprom has started the construction of the 72 km sub-sea part of the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta pipeline. The pipeline will link the gas-rich Bovanenkovo field at the Yamal Peninsula with the Russian pipeline grid.

Location

The operation is unprecedented both in Russian and international practice, Gazprom reports in a press release.

The Bovanenkovo-Ukhta pipeline will be 1100 km long, 72 km of which runs through the about 20 meter deep Baidarata Bay, a branch of the Kara Sea.

Two pipelines will be laid next to eachother across the bay. The 1,219 mm steel pipes are 27 mm thick and designed for 120 atm pressure, Gazprom reports.

The construction of the pipelines will allow Gazprom to boost its gas production. Alone the Bovanenkovo field will produce an annual 115 billion cubic meters of gas. When fully developed, the Yamal peninsula will produce a total of about 225 billion cubic meters per year.
