Gas extraction from artificial island

Yamal Bay, Tazov Bay

The Russian gas company Novatek intends to construct an artificial island in the Tazov Bay in connection with the development of a regional gas field.

Location

The construction of the islands is the only way how to develop the Yurkharovskoe field in the bay, company representatives told newspaper Kommersant. The average water depths in the bay are only four meters, Rosbaltnord.ru reports. The projected island will be 200 meter long and also have living quarters for 50 field workers. The company earlier considered to use a platform for the project, but the shallow waters in the area put a stop to plans. Production at the Yurkharovskoe field has been going on since 1970. Parts of the field is located on land, parts of it in the Ob Bay. Novotek now plans to start developing the reserves located under the bay.
