Russia sends Finnish pulp industry into catastrophe

Finnish Forest Industries Federation chief executive Anne Brunila warned in a statement Wednesday that Finland’s forest industry’s wood supply was drifting into a catastrophic situation, Newsroom Finland reports.

After higher Russian timber export duties drove costs up Finland’s forestry industry has become less competitive. Unless imported timber can be replaced by domestic supplies the lack of raw material can lead to permanent structural changes, the statement warned. Russian round timber export tariffs were increased strongly this spring and will continue to increase next year. The tariff increase is made in Russia in order to support Russian forestry processing industry
