The Swedish Air Force (mil.se)

While Russia is stepping up strategic flights in the Arctic and Norway is ready to invest in both Navy and Air Force in the North, the Swedish government proposes to leave all of northern Sweden without Air Force bases.

Location

The Swedish Armed Forces are preparing for a major restructuring. A new draft plan proposes to abandon the Air Force base F21 outside Luleå. If effectuated, the plan will leave Sweden with it northernmost air base located in Såtenäs. Regional Governor of the Norrbotten county, Mr. Per-Ola Eriksson strongly protests against the plans. He maintains that the F21 base outside Luleå is of major strategic importance for the country. -Even in an international perspective, questions would be asked, should the F21 be abandoned, he argues. The regional leader believes Sweden plays an important strategic role in the Barents Region.
