Solovki does not want Jesus-monument

Solovki
The monastery on Solovki in the White Sea rises like a fairytale castle in between the water and the sky.

-The projected 100 meter high statue of Christ will ruin the landscape of the Solovki archipelago, director of the local museum says. Famous Russian architect Zurab Tsereteli still wants his monumental work to be placed on the far northern island.

Location

Museum director Sergey Rubtsov says to Interfax that Mr. Tsereteli’s plans are not even an issue at Solovki. He is confident that the plans will not be materialized. -The museum is protected by Unesco, which hardly will approve the plans, Mr. Rubtsov says. Also Russian human rights activists are sceptical towards the plans. -Personally, I am very sceptical towards some of the giantomania of Zurab Tsreteli, head of the Memorial movement, Arsenii Roginskii says. –It seems to me that giantomania and the Solvki are incompatible, he adds. The Solovki islands is the site for one of the Russian Orthodox Church’ most noted monastries. The islands are also known for its cruel Stalin-era work camps.
