Jonas has been working for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat since 2008. He has a Masters Degree in Geography from NTNU in Trondheim from 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a journalist in the local newspaper in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger Avis.

Salla Border Station

Person number 100.000 in 2010 crossed the Salla border station on the Finnish-Russian border this week, breaking a new barrier for the border station.

The hospital in Kirkenes was built in the 1950ties. The construction of a new hospital might start already in 2014.

The establishment of a visa free travel zone across the Norwegian-Russian border has pushed forward the plans to build a new hospital in the Norwegian border town of Kirkenes.

The Russian vessel “Vladimir Timofeyev” crashed with a Norwegian fishing boat outside the coast of northern Norway. When ordered to meet the Norwegian Coast Guard for questioning, the Russian vessel set course for Russian waters instead.

Environment hazards do not stop at the border. Recently 137 young environmentalists from the Barents countries met for the the 2nd International Youth Civil Forum in Arkhangelsk to discuss sustainable development across borders in the north.

Barents Passion Week

In a four days passionate event, 80 youths from all over the Barents region will display their conceptions of Barents through art. – It will be a celebration of the good life in Barents, says the organizers in the Barents Regional Youth Council.

The Norwegian Government plans to increase the High North efforts with 22 million EUR for 2011. This will increase the Governments annual funds on the Norwegian High North to a total of 150 million EUR.

Barents focus on Margaritinskaya Fair

The finalization of the last unresolved dispute between Norway and Russia seems to have created an atmosphere of renewed possibilities for business investments across borders in the Barents Region. The Norwegian days in Arkhangelsk last week was a strong demonstration of this.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre see the opening of the honorary consulate in Arkhangelsk as a completion of some of the visions launched with the establishment of the Barents cooperation in 1993. This Friday the honorary consulate in Arkhangelsk was opened.
