Jonas has been working for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat since 2008. He has a Masters Degree in Geography from NTNU in Trondheim from 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a journalist in the local newspaper in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger Avis.

ARKHANGELSK: The Norwegian counties of Troms and Finnmark signed a renewed cooperation agreement with Arkhangelsk Oblast today, with the Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre present.

Oil companies have spent 5 billion EUR on exploration drillings in the Barents Sea since the area was opened. However, the only gas or oil fields of economic interest which are found are the Snøhvit and Goliat fields.

The Reinertsen Company had their biggest surplus ever on their annual accounts of 2009. However, their offshore yard in Murmansk ended up with a deficit of almost 2 million EUR in 2009.

Most of the border zone road from the Norwegian-Russian border crossing at Boris Gleb towards Nikel, was modernized in 2003. Now the remaining parts are being modernized.

The head of the Norwegian Barents Secretariat’s Russian offices, Andrey Shalyov, is to become Norway’s Honorary Consul in Arkhangelsk. The Honorary Consulate will be opened in September.

The idea to build a Barents House as the world’s tallest wooden building in the Norwegian border town of Kirkenes, was launched last year. Now, Norwegian investor Arthur Buckhardt is ready to build the house, but he needs support for the plans from the local county council.

Fiber-optic cable to Ny-Ålesund

The Norwegian settlement in Ny-Ålesund on the northwestern part of Spitzbergen will soon have the world’s northernmost fiber-optic data connection. A project which will provide the world with easier access to important data from the observatories in Ny-Ålesund.
