Jonas has been working for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat since 2008. He has a Masters Degree in Geography from NTNU in Trondheim from 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a journalist in the local newspaper in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger Avis.

Halvard Rundberg and Ylva Marie Pavval have no beliefs in rising young enthusiasm through endless speeches and boring seminars. They want to address youth through their own language, with reggae, rock’n roll and focus on human rights. All of this will be displayed in a grand rock tour all over the Barents Region in 2011.

The Canadian researcher Dr Aileen Espíritu has accepted the position as new Director of the Barents Insitute in the Norwegian border town of Kirkenes.

Many Norwegian helicopter pilots apply for jobs outside the Norwegian Air Force because they do not want to go to Afghanistan.

Northern Norway

In 2009 northern Norway experienced the highest population growth since 1974. For 35 years northern Norway has had a steady decline in population, but last year the population grew with 2196.

Snow Hotel Ustjany, Arkhangelsk Oblast

Recently the first snow hotel ever constructed in Russia was opened in the village of Kononovskaya in the south of Arkhangelsk oblast.

The Norwegian company Aker Solutions had hoped for the contract on developing the rig for the Goliat oil field in the Barents Sea. However, ENI decided on the Korean company Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The Norwegian border town of Kirkenes is celebrating the Barents Spektakel 2010 festival this week. The festival slogan this year is “Arctic Calling” and the program consists of conserts, theatre, art exhibitions and debates on numerous topics. See a slide-show of photos on this web page.

Tundra areas of the north may seem like endless wilderness with a huge potential for industrial activity. However, the activities of the industrial companies pose a challenge to the indigenous peoples’ traditional use of the pasture lands and the reindeers migrating routes.

February the 3rd the Barents Spektakel festival of 2010 will kick off in the Norwegian-Russian border town of Kirkenes. This year’s festival slogan is Arctic Calling and most events give their individual views upon this theme.

Mother Courage and her children

Both the Samovar Theatre in Kirkenes and the Stellaris Dance Theatre in Hammerfest, both situated in the northernmost county of Norway, celebrates their long lasting existence in 2010. To mark the anniversary, they co arrange the theatre play “Mother Courage and her children”, by Bertolt Brecht.
