Jonas has been working for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat since 2008. He has a Masters Degree in Geography from NTNU in Trondheim from 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a journalist in the local newspaper in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger Avis.

Northern Norway

Over the last 50 years the population in the three northernmost counties in Norway, Nordland, Troms and Finnmark, have had an increase of 6.4 percent. At the beginning of 2010 there will be 465.400 peoples living in northern Norway.

Despite financial crisis and low prices on the global mineral market, the mining industry in northern Norway is in growth. In Mo i Rana, the local mining company recently had to employ more workers to meet new productions demands, after a year of hard times and low production.

Three months of repairs and maintenance at a cost of 150 million EUR, was going to put an end to production problems at the Snøhvit LNG-plant in northern Norway. However, new problems have appeared and start up is postponed with another two weeks.
