Murmansk to become Capital of the Arctic

The Murmansk Oblast regional government has adopted a program aimed at making the Northern Russian town of Murmansk “Capital of the Arctic”.

The Murmansk regional government this week discussed strategies for social-economic development of Murmansk Oblast in the period to 2025. Four main scenarios for the future of Murmansk Oblast were prepared: “Warehouse – strategic reservoir”, “Terminal and fleet base”, “Global resources” and “Capital of the Arctic”. The regional politicians decided to adopt the last one of these as the targeted program for the development of the region, RIA Novosti reports.

If the goal to make Murmansk the Capital of the Arctic is reached, the Gross Regional Product of Murmansk Oblast is expected to increase four times.
