16 kilometers border queue

Trucks lining up in the border queue at Vaalimaa border station in Southern Finland

Do you think it is frustrating to wait in the queue into Russia at one of the border crossing points in the Barents Region? Forget about it. At the Valalimaa border station from southern Finland to Russia, the queue of trucks was 16 kilometers long last Sunday.

Location

The Vaalimaa border is the heaviest trafficked border for import of goods on road from EU to Russia. Among other goods, the border is used for import of cars from Europe to Russia.

Vaalimaa is the main border on the main road from Helsinki to St. Petersburg.

YLE News reports with reference to the Finnish Transport Agency’s Road Administration that there are no specific reasons why the queues this weekend become so long, but it is at least a sign that the economical downturn in Russia is coming to an end.

Also at the border station Nuijaamaa in southern Finland the queue reached four kilometers.

Something to think about next time you line up in a queue with some few cars or trucks in front of you – and maybe have to wait for an hour or two -  at one of the border crossing points into Russia from Finland or Norway in the north.
