German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Lithuania this week said that there is “a long way to go” before the EU and Russia can open up for visa-free travel.

The German leader during her visit to the Baltic country did not oppose the abolishment of visa regulations between Russia and the EU, but stressed that more time is needed.

I do not consider this to be unrealistic, however we need to go a long way before we get there, Merkel said, a press release from her office reads.

During the visit, Merkel also confirmed that she is positive towards including Kaliningrad Oblast in special cross-border travelling regulation. Both Poland and Russia want all of Kaliningrad to be included in the visa-free deal, while Lituania reportedly is reluctant to include the whole region, Prime-Tass reports.

The Schengen agreement opens up for visa-free travel regimes in 30-50 km zones along the border. As reported by BarentsObserver, such agreements are under negotiations also between Russia and Norway.
