Economical guarantee for Chess Olympiad

The Norwegian Government gives a NOK 70 million guarantee for the planned Chess Olympiad 2014 in the northern Norwegian city of Tromsø.

Minister of Culture, Anniken Huitfeldt, says in a press release posted at the ministry’s website that Chess is a great sport, and the government provides this support to strengthen Tromsø’s chances to get the Chess Olympiad in 2014.

NOK 70 million (€8,3 million) will cover more than half of the expected costs for the arrangement, supposed to attract some 1,400 chess players from around the world.

The decision about which city will get the Chess Olympiad 2014 will be taken next year when the Chess Olympiad will be arranged in the Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiysk.
