First traces of radioactive iodine measured in the Pasvik valley on the Norwegian Russian border.

- The levels are very low and do not involve any risk to humans or the environment, says director Per Strand with the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authorities.

The radiation authorities intensified measurements following the on-going accident at Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

Radioactive iodine is measured in very low levels at the monitoring station at Svanhovd environmental centre in the Pasvik valley, just on Norway’s border to Russia in the north.
