The European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced a procurement notice for the decommissioning of the Lepse nuclear service ship, which is moored outside Murmansk, packed with badly stored spent nuclear fuel.

Location

The procurement notice published on EBRD’s web site lists among the services and works to be covered by the project: improvement of the radiation situation on board the Lepse ship and preparation for her transport; purchase, manufacture and supply of equipment and tools for the discharge of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste handling; development of infrastructure at Atomflot and Nerpa shipyards in the Murmansk region and relocation of the Lepse from the Atomflot site to the Nerpa Shipyard.

It is expected that the project will be completed in three years. The estimated cost of the project is approximately 40 Million EUR, the notice reads. Tendering for contracts is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010.

EBRD in June 2008 allocated 43 million EUR to the decommissioning of Lepse, which presents the biggest nuclear and radiation risk of all retired nuclear service ships in Russia. The vessel was taken out of service in 1988.”
