Svalbard coal on fire

The Svea coal harbor at Svalbard.

Fire discovered in an 80,000 tons pile of coal in Svea on Svalbard.

Location

The fire in the pile near the harbour of Svea was discovered Tuesday morning, reports Svalbardposten.

The coal pile is rather small and is isolated from the rest of the coal awaiting shipment from the harbour when the ice goes in the summer.

The mining company Store Norske says it will not be a difficult job to isolate and extinguish the fire.

In 2005, a huge fire took place inside the underground coal mine at Svea with large damages.
