Modernized Northern Fleet destroyer on sea trials

The Northern Fleet Udaloy-class destroyer “Vitse-admiral Kulakov” has started sea trials in the Baltic Sea, after being in overhaul for nearly 20 years.

The sea trials start in the Baltic Sea on January 18, web site Fontanka.ru writes.

The vessel was nearly ready in December 2009, but a fire on December 4, where one person was killed and another one severely injured, delayed the progress.

After the accident, six officers were removed from service, while criminal charges were filed against the vessel’s executive officer, Fontanka.ru reports.

Vitse-admiral Kulakov” was commissioned in 1982 and was on combat duty in the Northern Fleet until March 1991. It was first taken in for repair at a shipyard in Kronstadt, but moved to Northern Shipyard in St. Petersburg in 2000.

According to Wikipedia, the Northern Fleet has two other Udaloy-class destroyers in service, while a third one is in reserve.
