In 1961 there were totally 437.400 living in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark County. In the 50 years which have passed the number has increased with 28.000 inhabitants. And most of the population increase is due to the growth in Troms County, and the region’s largest city Tromsø in particular. In 1961 there were 12.300 inhabitants in Tromsø. Today there are 67.000 people living in the city.
In the same period the entire country of Norway has had a population increase of 1.259.600 inhabitants. At the entrance of 2010 the population in Norway will be 4.854.400. If the population growth in Norway continues at the same rate as in 2009, the population will pass 5 million by 2012.
