Putin visits Severodvinsk

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is visiting Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk today. He will lead a meeting on the state armament program for 2011-2020 and visit the Sevmash shipbuilding company.

The state armament program for 2011-2020 will become the basis for the profile of the Russian armed forces and their transition to modern Armaments and military hardware, RIA Novosti reports.

The Russian Defense Ministry has almost doubled allocations for the 2011-2020 state arms procurement program, Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin said eralier this year. While the original allocations amounted to 13 trillion rubles, they would be raised to 20 trillion, RIA Novosti reported.

During his visit to Sevmash, Putin will be inspecting the new fourth generation nuclear submarine “Aleksander Nevsky”, which is ready to start mooring trials.

Four subs in Russia’s newest class of nuclear powered strategic submarines are presently in different levels of completeness at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk; Yury Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky, Vladimir Monomakh and Svyatitel Nikolay. The first-mentioned has been undergoing sea tests in the White Sea area and will probably launch its first Bulava missile within the end of the year.
