Arkhangelsk got the title due to its courage, steadfastness and heroism in the fight for freedom and independence during World War II, reports Dvinaland.ru.
The ceremony was held at the Catherine Hall of the Kremlin and was lead by Russian President Dmitri Medvedev. Arkhangelsk was represented by a delegation of 20 people, including mayor of Arkhangelsk Viktor Pavlenko and Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk.
