Plans for new border stations ready

The number of border stations on the Norwegian side of the border to Russia will be reduced from six to two. The plans for the new stations are now ready. The plan is to open the first of these already in 2012.

Location

Today there are six stations along the 196 kilometers long border, but from 2013 there will only be two large stations. One will be build at Svanvik in the southern parts of the border strip, while the other will be located close to the Storskog border crossing point. Each of the new stations will cost 12.8 million EUR.

The Norwegian Defense Estate Agency Statsbygg has held an open competition for architects on design of the new border stations. Of the 13 participating offices the competition was won by the architects’ office A-lab with plans called “A home for you – a home for us”.

The winner had to come up with a holistic solution that could cover all the needs for the border guards’ service, at the same time as the buildings should have a good architectonic solution with focus on environmental requirements, energy efficiency and cost, Forsvarsbygg writes on its web site.

One of the most important features with the winning project are the outdoor areas, where the border guard soldiers can do anything from repairing equipment and machinery to play football and have concerts.
