Arms the Arctic with 13 new airfields

Russia’s rearmament of its Arctic region continues with a further boost for the airforce and radar control. Aimed to safeguard the nation’s military security, a senior commander says.

“We are planning to build 13 airfields, an air-ground firing range, as well as ten radar and vectoring posts,” Lt. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev, head of the National Defense Management Center, said to RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

He argues the installations is needed to safeguard Russia’s military security in the Arctic region.

Izvestia reports on Wednesday that construction work for military facilities is already under way at Novaya Zemlya and other locations along the Arctic coast.

Last week, BarentsObserver reported, with referance to RIA Novosti, that Russia’s Minister of Defense told top military officers in Moscow that Russia during 2014 will complete deployment of military units on its territory all along the Arctic Circle. 

“We have been very active in the Arctic region lately, and this year we will have a large number of units deployed along the Arctic Circle, practically from Murmansk to Chukotka, Sergey Shoigu said quoted by 

RT quoted the Defense Minister saying: “We have set quite a pace in our foray into the Arctic.”
