Norwegian military personnel during the summer has improved infrastructure on the remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen, where the Norwegian Armed Forces operate a LORAN-C network transmitter.

Personnel from Brigade Nord’s Engineer Battalion has spent the summer on Jan Mayen in the North Atlantic Ocean, supporting the Norwegian Cyber Defense Force in building a new road, the Armed Forces’ website reads.

The 377 km² large volcanic island of Jan Mayen is part of the Kingdom if Norway. Norway’s Armed Forces are responsible for maintaining a permanent presence and claiming sovereignty over the island. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has a station on Jan Mayen, which has a population of 18 during winter, and about the double during summer.

Jan Mayen is an important part of the LORAN-C radio navigation network in the Atlantic Ocean.
