Medvedev chooses Orlov as Governor of Arkhangelsk

Igor Orlov is suggested by Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev as Governor of Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Location

Of the three candidates the regional Arkhangelsk branch of United Russia suggested to the post as governor, Medvedev has picked Orlov – currently holding position as acting governor – as his candidate to be considered by the regional Duma, Kremlin’s web site reads.

The former Governor of Arkhangelsk Ilya Mikhalchuk, was fired by President Medvedev on January 13, as Barents Observer reported. United Russia received 31.9 % of the votes in the December 2011 Duma elections, down from 56.7 % in 2007.

Igor Orlov was born in the Donetsk region in the Ukraineon in 1964. In 1987 he graduated from St Petersburg State University of Aerospace Machinery Building.

Orlov has worked in Arkhangelsk Oblast for many years: In 1987-1994 at the projecting bureau Onega in Severodvinsk as an engineer-technologist, chief of sector and main technologist; in 1994-2008 as Head of the department for automatic production control systems and Deputy General Director of the Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk.
