Goliat drilling to start in October

The appraisal well will be part of a drilling project which is to last for 50 days and is the initiation of the drilling program for the Goliat field, Norway’s first operating oil-field in the Barents Sea.

Location

The Eni operated Goliat field was awarded in the “Barents Sea Round” in 1997. The licensing round was initiated by the authorities in order to promote interest in the Barents Sea as an oil and gas region. Oil was struck in 2000.

The appraisal well will be drilled by the semi-submersible drilling unit “Scarabeo 8”, which is built for drilling in arctic waters and is currently performing its first drilling operation on the Statoil operated Odden field in the North Sea. The appraisal well will be part of a drilling project which is to last for 50 days and is the initiation of the drilling program for the Goliat field.

In addition to the appraisal well, 22 developement wells will be drilled. The development well drilling is planned to start November this year and is the process is estimated to last for 1.251 days. The total development cost of the Goliat field is estimated at approximately €4 billion.
