Fishers paid to stay away from seismic surveys

Cod in Northern Norway

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate will pay fishers to stay away from areas for seismic surveys.

Location

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate plans to conclude mapping of sea areas outside the counties Nordland and Troms by collecting 3D seismic data this summer, FiskeribladetFiskaren.no

writes. The work is done on behalf of the Norwegian authorities, who have allocated more than 400 million NOK to this purpose in course of the last three years. The directorate wants to pay fishers who usually work in these waters to stay away from the area the six weeks the survey will last. The payment will be approximately the same as fishers get in compensation for documented loss of income because of petroleum activity.

In connection with the seismic survey outside Nordland the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research will carry out an extensive research project on how seismic shooting scare fish away and how shock waves move in water.

The seismic colleting will be conducted in July and August by the scientific vessels “Ocean Explorer” and “Geo Pacific”. Both vessels will have experts on fisheries onboard.
