Prime Minister Vladimir Putin yesterday appointed Dmitrii Bezdelov, former official in the Ministry of Defence, as new head of the federal Border Development Agency. Mr. Bezdelov’s main task will be to increase efficiency and reduce red tape and corruption on the country’s border passes.

Location

Dmitrii Bezdelov is 37 years of age and comes from a post in the Ministry of Defence. He also has work experiences from a Gazprom subsidiary.

The Border Development Agency was established last year in a bid to improve the state of affairs on the country’s borders. Putin has himself expressed strong discontent with the situation in the Russian Customs.

In a meeting in 2006, Putin asked former minister of economic development German Gref, the man responsible for the customs services, about when the situation with the “inter-mingling of customs authorities with business representatives on the borders in an economic ecstasy will end”.

Putin, who is heading a government Border Commission, in the commission meeting of 26 June this year appointed his loyal protégé Sergey Ivanov new deputy head of the commission.
