Jonas has been working for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat since 2008. He has a Masters Degree in Geography from NTNU in Trondheim from 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a journalist in the local newspaper in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger Avis.

The Norwegian Barents Secretariat wants to materialise the role of the High North with the building of a signature building in the Arctic border town of Kirkenes. The building will be the highest wooden building ever constructed, and made in line with the best possible environmental standards.

StatoilHydro will close down the Snøhvit LNG-plant in northern Norway for 80 days in August due to maintenance. The oil company says that this production stop will put a final end to all the problems they have had with the plant.

The energy company Total is spending 120 million EUR on the Victoria well, which is considered to be the most important exploration drilling on the Norwegian continental shelf in 2009.

The mayor of the Norwegian border town of Kirkenes, Linda Beate Randal, has written a letter to the Norwegian Foreign Minister asking him to ease the visa application prosess for Nikel citizens and opening a Norwegian consulate office in the Russian border town.

As of November 1st 2009, StatoilHydro will change its name to Statoil. Recently the company released the new logo which will adorn the group’s installations and buildings in the future. However, the new profile had to endure a lot of criticism.

The Norwegian energy company had hoped for a breakthrough in the Barents Sea in 2008. However, the exploration drilling last year ended up with disappointing results.

The Norwegian Labour party in its annual congress this week decided to postpone its official party decision on whether to open up for oil and gas exploration in the Lofoten and Vesterålen area. Some say that the powerful party inevitably will say yes to petroleum activity in the area.

The International Barents Secretariat has employed Swedish Lars Miguel Utsi as its Indigenous Peoples adviser. One of his commitments is to encourage good entrepreneurship among indigenous peoples.
