The humpback salmon has spread from Russian rivers and over to Norwegian rivers, and is now threatening the existence of the wild Atlantic salmon in Norwegian rivers.

NATO’s General Secretary, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, wants a stronger NATO- presence in the arctic, as changing climate makes the area more accessible.

Green light to cod from WWF

Fish farming on cod is about to become a threat to the stock of wild cod in the Norwegian oceans. If escaped cod from fish farming cross breeds with wild cod, it could hamper the wild cod’s ability to survive.

The drilling rig Scarabeo 8 is under construction in Italy and will be used to develop the Goliat field outside northern Norway. However, the Norwegian petroleum safety authority has demanded operator ENI to make several improvements on the rig before it will be allowed to operate in the Barents Sea.

The Arctic

A group of three Norwegians will this summer try to sail around the North Pole in one summer. If they complete the trip, they will be the first ever to do so.

Murmansk Oblast’s notification of invitation to tenders for the Murmansk Transport Hub development, was released this week. The total costs of contracts at this stage are 995 million Rubles, of which 463 million Rubles shall be used in 2009.

The Russian economist and former prime minister Grigory Yavlinsky believes the difficulties which Telenor has encountered in Russia could be an element in the fight for access to petroleum resources in the Barents Sea. According to Yavlinsky, Putin decides the outcome of the trial, and a negative decision could frighten StatoilHydro away from the Shtokman project.

The rising international market price on salmon has given an upturn for Norwegian fish farming industry. Now producers of salmon in northern Norway are about to run out of fish.
