The two major oil and gas companies Statoil of Norway and Gazprom of Russia have cooperated in the establishment and financing of the study “Environmental Monitoring and Nature Management in the Northern Oil and Gas Producing Regions”, Teknisk Ukeblad writes. The first half of the study takes place in St. Petersburg, while the last semester the students study at the University of Stavanger.

This is the first time that Russia and Norway cooperate on an education project aimed at creating a more environmentally safe production of oil and gas in the Barents Sea.

The initiative to the establishment of the study came from the Russian side. The Russians are interested in using Norwegian environmental legislation as a template for the offshore oil production in the High North.

Three Norwegian students are currently doing a Master’s degree in “Environmental Monitoring and Nature Management in the Northern Oil and Gas Producing Regions” at the University of St. Petersburg.
