Both the two giant shipyards Sevmash and Zvezdochka in Severodvinsk, the engineering capital in northern Russia, have full order books for 2011.
- Our production program for this year is extremely hard – we have to deliver three nuclear-powered submarines to the navy and send one aircraft carrier off to India for testing, said General Director at Sevmash Nikolay Kalistratov at a recent meeting in an interdepartmental working group on submarine production.
More than 100 representatives from the Ministry of Defense, defense industry and projecting companies had gathered at Sevmash for this meeting, Sevmash’ web site reads.
The three submarines that will be delivered the Russian navy in 2011 are the two Borey-class strategic submarines “Yury Dolgoruky” and “Aleksander Nevsky” and the multi-purpose Graney-class “Severodvinsk”.
“Yury Dolgoruky” has gone through more than ten sea tests and is now moored at Sevmash, waiting for the ice in the White Sea to melt in spring. Then, a series of tests of the new Bulava missile will take place during the summer.

“Severodvinsk” and “Aleksander Nevsky” are currently undergoing harbor trials and will start sea trials in the White Sea when the ice goes, probably in May.
Zvezdochka – the other major shipyard in Severodvinsk, will also have a very busy year, having received state orders for maintenance of nearly 300 naval vessels, as BarentsObserver reported.
