Barents Rescue 2009 Opening Ceremony

Russia’s largest international rescue exercise Barents Rescue-2009 opened in festivity in Murmansk yesterday.

MURMANSK: -We are the first to come to rescue! – says Barents Rescue banner above the stage on the Five Corner Square downtown Murmansk.

Representatives from Russia, Norway, Finland and Sweden expressed their hope for the success of the joint rescue operations that started today. The opening ceremony was bright and filled with Russian singing and dancing, balloons, fireworks and official speeches. Firefighting and rescue equipment was exhibited in the street. Since 2001, Barents Rescue is held almost every two years. This is the first time Russia hosts the event. The schedule of BR2009 is really expanded: five phases of rescue exercises in just three days. More than any other previous Barents Rescue programme included.

“Our idea was to cover all spheres we work in. These are safety at sea, forest firefighting, major traffic accidents, oil spill cleanup, radioactive waste treatment etc. This time we are using not only our own forces, but engaging the Northern Fleet, Internal Affairs Directorate, oil tanker Belokamenka and many other structures”,comments Tatiana Zakharova,the representative of Ministry for Emergencies in Murmansk Oblast.

The Minister for Emergency Situations Sergey Shoygu who was earlier reported to take part in the events won’t be able to come. Next BR 2011 will take place in Sweden.
