The Arctic naval base of Gadzhievo is preparing to receive new fourth generation nuclear-powered submarines.

Location

The Northern Fleet base of Gadzhievo, home base to most of Russia’s large nuclear submarines, will have all infrastructure in place for new submarines by the end of the year, RIA Novosti reports. The base is expected to receive two of Russia’s newest subs – the Borey class “Yury Dolgoruky” and the Yasen class “Severodvinsk”. “Yury Dolgoruky” is planned to be taken into service in 2012, “Severodvinsk” in 2013.

“Yury Dolgoruky” is the first strategic submarine to be built in Russia since 1992.

Constructor of the submarines, Sevmash Shipyard has concluded all tests of “Yury Dolgoruky” and is ready to sign the acceptance delivery statement, the shipyard’s web site reads.

“Yury Dolgoruky” was originally planned to be based in the Pacific Fleet, but the plans were altered, probably to restore Russia’s nuclear capacity in the north after the nuclear submarine “Yekaterinburg” was seriously damaged in a fire in December 2011.

The next sub in the Borey series, the “Aleksandr Nevsky”, is currently undergoing sea trials in the White Sea, ITAR-TASS reports.
