Forever crossing borders

Will Fatima ever become a full citizen, with a full time job and a driver’s license?

Fatima is a refugee from Caucasus. She has a resident permit in Norway, but there are still many borders to cross.

Location

Fatima came to Norway as a refugee with her family in 2002. Escaping conflicts in Caucasus, she and her family were given permanent residency after years through the paper mill. She is happy to live in Norway, but there are still many challenges that she must face as a refugee.

She is trained as a teacher of mathematics in Russia, but the quest for recognition of that education has been a long one. She has been working as an unqualified health worker, part time, for many years. She has taken a health workers certificate, but still has no full time job in that profession.

Meanwhile, Fatima has been able to get her teachers education from Russia approved, but still gets no more that a few hours a week as an assistant, and no contract.

In this film she struggles to get the driver’s license. But the struggle also becomes a metaphor for her other struggles. Will she ever be able to work as a teacher in mathematics?

Fatima Arsamakova lives in Vadsø with her husband and two sons. She works part time as a health worker and takes active art in different volunteer community work.
