Statoil and Arkhangelsk: new routes for cooperation

The Administration in Arkhangelsk has had a memorandum of cooperation with Statoil since 2008.

The steering committee on realization of a memorandum that was concluded between Arkhangelsk Oblast and Norwegian oil major Statoil in 2008 recently met in Arkhangelsk to discuss future projects.

The key cooperation directions of Statoil and the Arkhangelsk region are according to Benedikt Henriksen, Head of the company’s corporate social activities -  education, industry, environmental protection and the social sphere. 
 
In the sphere of education the Norwegian company is implementing six projects with a total financing of 9 million rubles together with the Northern Arctic Federal University. Statoil is also granting scholarships to the best students. The administration representatives offered the Norwegian company to participate in the establishment of a resource center for professional education at the Arkhangelsk polytechnic college.   
 
As Benedikt Henriksen pointed out, the industrial projects mostly includes work on gas and oil reserves development, not only onshore, but offshore as well.
In the sphere of environmental protection, Statoil is cooperating with the Arkhangelsk regional emergency service and the Agency for natural resources and ecology. The company has among other things contributed to the education of firefighters and purchase of special analyzers for monitoring of pollutive emissions in the air. The company’s financial support for the project is 2.25 million rubles.
 
Statoil’s social projects in the region include support to the Arkhangelsk antituberculosis charity funds.  The program is directed towards helping children of different age groups from disadvantaged families and families with low income. Statoil is also a partner of the Barents regional music school for children number 1. 
 
The cooperation between the Arkhangelsk region cooperation and Statoil will be continued, and it is planned that the new memorandum will be signed in December.  Among the suggestions for new directions of the cooperation are a system for grants to scientific research in the sphere of energy efficiency, ecology, historical and cultural development, support to disabled children support and many others.
