Regional rescue operation for Tromsø Olympics

Olympic Games for Tromso

Companies in northern Norway are ready to provide 200 million NOK of fresh funding in an attempt to save Norway’s bid for the Tromsø Winter Olympic Games 2018.

An official report presented to the public this week shows that the Tromsø 2018 will be twice as expensive as previously estimated. With the new cost estimate of almost 29 billion NOK and the subsequent need for 19 billion NOK of state guarantees, the Norwegian government is likely to disapprove with the plans. Now, companies in the region say they are ready to provide an addition 200 million NOK to the project. That is the exact sum, which has made the Norwegian Confederation of Sports turn negative towards the project. The Sport Confederation has earlier agreed to contribute with maximum 650 million NOK for the Olympics. This week’s report however showed that the confederation will have to pay an additional 200 million. That information made the powerful confederation turn sour towards the project. The new fresh money from north Norwegian businesses will now however force the organisation to again review its position. The confederation board will have meeting on the issue on Monday.
