Mining project might trigger power crisis

The Syd-Varanger mining project outside the town of Kirkenes, Norway, could trigger a power deficit in the region, which might hamper the development of alternative industry.

Location

Main power generator in the region, the Varanger Kraft company, admits that the Syd-Varanger mines, to be up running in the course of 2009, might drain the region of power.

-When production starts at Syd-Varanger we could see a power crisis in the East Finnmark region, representative of Varanger Kraft Tore Martinsen says to newspaper Finnmarken.

The power problems in Kirkenes can be found in major parts of the Norwegian northernmost Finnmark county. The region has an under-developed connection with the power network of the rest of the country, and major investment will have to be made in new power lines if the problem is to be solved.

Among the alternative solutions to the problem could be the connection of the Norwegian Finnmark county with the network in northern Finland.
