Yesterday BarentsObserver reported that the nuclear-powered missile cruiser “Pyotr Veliky” (Peter the Great) passed the coast of Northern Norway last weekend. The vessel arrived at its base in Severomorsk yesterday after nearly six months on the World’s oceans.
According to Rear Admiral in the Northern Fleet Vladimir Kasatonov, this was the longest and longest lasting tour any Russian surface vessel has made in 25 years, Vesti reports.
During the tour, the vessel took part in the international fight against pirates outside Somalia. The vessel’s Spetsnaz unit intercepted, boarded and disarmed a group of pirate boats trying to board a transport vessel. Ten pirates were detained and the crew on “Pyotr Veliky” took their three boats as a trophy.
