Jonas has been working for the Norwegian Barents Secretariat since 2008. He has a Masters Degree in Geography from NTNU in Trondheim from 2003. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a journalist in the local newspaper in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger Avis.

Barents Spektakel 2008

At the end of January the Norwegian border town of Kirkenes will be the venue for one of the Barents Region’s largest cultural festivals, the Barents Spektakel.

The Prirazlomnoe platform

The Russian oil field Prirazlomnoe has been delayed and remodelled several times by lisence holder Sevmorneftegaz. Now, the international petroleum industry is questioning whether the Russians are able to develop and complete such a large offshore oil fields on their own.

The value of the Sydvaranger Mine company in northern Norway has dropped to 1/6 of the value six months ago. However, the value drop and low iron prices do not seem to affect the company’s plans for the reopening of the Arctic mines outside Kirkenes.

Lofoten, Norway

If the waters outside Lofoten and Vesterålen in northern Norway are opened for the petroleum industry, it could lead to investments of around 30 billion EUR in the area, a recently published report concludes.
