Shipbuilding leading industry in Arkhangelsk

Prirazlomnaya platform is now in Murmansk for completion

Not surprisingly, shipbuilding was the leading industry in Arkhangelsk Oblast in 2010 in terms of growth in industrial production.

Location

According to Arkhangelsk Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk the industrial production index for the region last year was 115 percent, which is more than the overall Russian result, RIA Novosti reports.

The shipbuilding industry in Arkhangelsk Oblast had a 51 percent growth in industrial production in 2010. According to Nikoaly Kalistratov, General Director at Sevmash, one of the two giant shipbuilding plants in the region, the increase at his yard is first of all a result of more civilian orders last year.

Sevmash completed construction of the world’s largest ice-protected oil drilling platform Prirazlomnaya and is about to finish modernization of the aircraft carrier “Admiral Gorshkov” for the Indian navy.

2011 looks out to become another successful year for Arkhangelsk shipbuilding, with full order books both at Sevmash and Zvezdochka. Sevmash plans to deliver three new nuclear-powered submarines to the Russian navy in 2011, and Zvezdochka has received state orders for maintenance of nearly 300 vessels.
