Government representatives confirm that Russia will impose import restrictions on a string of additional goods from ”unfriendly” countries in case of further western sanctions. The ban could include cars, medical equipment, as well as equipment for the aviation and shipbuilding industry, Russian government officials confirm.

According to newspaper Vedomosti, the government has the list of additional counter-measures ready. However, President Vladimir Putin has so far rejected requests from government to extend the trade restrictions beyond foodstuffs.

Russian authorities are now hectically seeking ways to replace banned imports with either domestic production or products from countries not included in the sanction list.

According to the government, Russia will be able to cope also without imports of cars and the other would-be sanction items. The country in the first half of 2014 imported 27 percent of its cars, 46 percent of trucks and 13 percent of buses, TVrain.ru reports.
