Finnish Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala is skeptical to the current development in Finnish Lapland where new mines open and are operated by foreign companies.

Hautala says Lapland should benefit more from the fast developing mining industry. “The diggers are paying a minimal fee,” Hautala said according to Helsingin Sanomat.

She promotes a bigger state share in the ownership of mining companies.

Several recent mineral discoveries will boost the ongoing mining Klondike in Lapland and a billion Euros’ could be invested, as previously reported by BarentsObserver.

- When all mining projects in Lapland are combined, we are speaking about a billion Euros’ worth of investments, and thousands of jobs, says County Governor of Lapland Esko Lotvinen, said in November last year commenting on the upsides of new mines in Lapland.
