Statoil drilled dry in Barents Sea

Statoil did not discover oil in the controversial Apollo well near Bear Island.

Location

Statoil has completed the drilling of a wildcat well about 45 kilometers north of the “Wisting Central” discovery, and 350 kilometers north of Hammerfest. The well was dry, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate writes in a statement.

The well is the northernmost ever drilled.

Drilling of this well was the subject of national and international attention in late May when Greenpeace boarded the exploration rig Transocean Spitsbergen, protesting drilling that close to the Bear Island, home to some of the largest bird colonies in the world.
