Offshore gas stirs controversy along Ob Bay

Gas production in the Ob Bay could ruin local environment, the local population fears.

Gazprom wants to develop major gas fields in the Ob Bay. But many locals are against the plans.

Location

The Kamennomysskoye-More field, located in the southern end of the Ob Bay, holds 535 billion cubic meters of natural gas and is on the priority list of Gazprom subsidiary Gazprom Dobycha Yamburg.

However, many locals are against the offshore development plans. In a recent open hearing on project development, people from the nearby village of Tazovsky expressed discontent with the plans.

According to the Agency of Gas and Oil Information, a regional news provider, an overwhelming number of the locals attending the hearing diapproved with the development of the Kamennomysskoye-More field. The project could pollute the Ob waters and ruin fishing grounds, they argued.

Paradically, Gazprom still managed to get the necessary support from the audience, Angi.ru reports.

Gazprom intends to start production at the Kamennomysskoye-More in 2022. The project includes the construction of a special ice-protected production platform. The gas will be pipelined westwards to the existing gas infrastructure of the Yamburg field.

The Kamennomysskoye-More will be Gazprom’s first major offshore field in the Ob bay. The company intends to develop also a string of other nearby fields, among them the Severo-Kamennomysskoye, Semakovskoye, Tota-Yakhtinskoye, Antipayutinskoye, Chugoryakhtinskoye, Obskoye, Parusovoye and Severo-Parusovoye, the company informs on its website.

Gazprom is from before heavily engaged in projects both in the Yamal Peninsula and other parts of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
