Arctic ice melting

Overall Arctic sea ice thinned about 18 centimetres a year, for a total of 72 centimetres over the last four winters.

Location

A satellite study made by NASA and University of Washington shows that older, thicker Arctic ice has shrunk by 42 percent over the last four years, writes Canada.com.

The study also shows that the total Arctic area covered by the thicker, older multi-year ice that has survived one or more summers shrank by 42 percent.

In recent years, the amount of ice replaced in the winter has not been sufficient to offset summer ice losses.
