In 2007 the Vyborg Shipyard and Gazprom daughter company Gazflot signed a contract on delivery of two semi-submersible drilling platforms for the Shtokman gas field. The first platform is to be delivered in 2010, the second in 2011. The contract had a 2 billion USD price tag.

The association of producers to the oil and gas sector regrets that significant amounts of the contracts have gone to companies abroad, web site B-port reports. The Vyborgs Shipyard plans to buy the topsides from Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea and the drilling equipment, which stands for almost 40 percent of the whole contract, from National Oilwell Varco, USA.

In these times of crisis, Russian enterprises within mechanical engineering are forced to carry out reductions, and the association urges the Gazprom board of directors to consider Gazflot’s way spending of spending money.

Gazprom has repeatedly stated that it will acquire the lion’s share of all equipment and supplies from Russian manufacturer. As reported by BarentsObserver, that was also the message from Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in a meeting on the future of the Russian ship building industry this week
