€400 million will be invested into the new mine near Sodankylä in Northern Finland. When the mine opens in 2012 some 200 people will be employed.

It was yesterday that the Board of Directors in the mining company First Quantum Minerals Ltd. Approved the development of the Kevitsa nickel-copper mine in Lapland.

The process facility will be designed for five million tonnes per year with built in expansion capabilities, First Quantum Minerals writes in a press-release.

-We believe that Kevitsa is going to be a long-life operation that will be a meaningful contributor to the growth of the Company and yield significant benefits to all stakeholders, says Philip Pascal, Chairman and CEO of First Quantum.

The deposit is one of the world’s major undeveloped sulphide nickel deposits and one of the largest mineral discoveries in Finland’s history.

The development of the mine starts next year and two year later the first commercial production will start, reports YLE.

It is currently a mining boom in Finnish Lapland. Earlier this year, the first gold bars were produced with gold from Europe’s largest operating gold mine, located near Kittilä west of Sodankylä. Some 250 workers are employed in the gold mine and enrichment facility, as BarentsObserver reported in February.
