The Russian Coast Guard has arrested the Faroe-registered ship “Skaloberg” on suspicion of illegal fishing in the Russian part of the Barents Sea.

Location

It was the Russian coast guard vessel “Ural” which last week caught interest in the “Skaloberg”. An inspection conducted at sea in the Russian economic zone revealed that the foreign vessel had caught 618 tons more than the official catch permission.

The inspection also revealed several other violations, Murman.ru reports.

The “Skaloberg” was subsequently guided to Murmansk where police proceedings will take place.

As BarentsObserver has reported, the Barents Sea cod stocks are now at its biggest since 1948. At the same time cases of fish fraud is on the increase.

The “Skaloberg” was built by the Norwegian Kirkenes-based yard “Kimek” in 2003. It carries a flag from the Faroe Islands.
