Finland’s Parliament approves northern NPP

A possible location site for a new nuclear power plant is Simo, south of Oulu in Lapland.

In a 121 to 71 vote on Thursday the Parliament has given its approval to construct one new commercial nuclear power reactor in either Simo or Pyhäjoki in Northern Finland.

If built, the nuclear power plant just south of Oulu will be the second nuclear power plant in the Barents Region. In Murmansk Oblast, the Kola nuclear power plant operates four reactors.

It is the energy company Fennovoima that says it has interests in building a nuclear power plant to supply energy to the grid from the Oulu region, reports YLE News.

In Thursday’s vote, a majority of the Parliament members also voted in favor of a new reactor to be built by the energy company Teollissuden Voima in Olkiluoto in Southern Finland.

Finland today operates four reactors at two nuclear power plants in the south, while a fifth reactor is currently already under construction.
